Da queste parti si usa corredare ogni tesi di dottorato con una lista di una decina di affermazioni topiche (stellingen) riguardo a cio’ che il candidato ha imparato durante il suo dottorato. La consuetudine prevede che meta’ di queste riguardino la tesi stessa, mentre l’altra meta’ puo’ riguardare qualunque cosa. Ne avevo gia’ dato un esempio parecchio tempo fa (il memorabile “I ciclisti sono anarchici, i passeggeri degli autobus comunisti e gli automobilisti fascisti” di Inti Pelupessy), ma oggi ho compilato una raccolta dei piu’ interessanti stellingen delle varie tesi che ho ricevuto.

- Il lavoro di un/una supervisor e’ di “sovrintendere” il lavoro di uno/una studente in ogni circostanza, non solo quando lo/la studente va da lui/lei (The task of a supervisor is to “supervise” the work of the student at all times, and not only when the student goes to him/her)
- Un talk dovrebbe essere come una minigonna, abbastanza corto da suscitare interesse, abbastanza lungo per coprire l’essenziale (A talk should be like a miniskirt, short enough to keep you interested, long enough to cover the main parts)

- Il fatto che l’obesita’ sia meno frequente nei Paesi Bassi che nei Paesi circostanti puo’ essere spiegato dalla popolarita’ della bicicletta come mezzo di trasporto (The fact that obesity occurs less frequently in the Netherlands than in the surrounding countries can be explained by the popularity of the bicycle as a means for transportation)

- La recente esclusione di Plutone dalla condizione di pianeta e’ una buona pubblicita’ per l’astronomia entro il mondo scientifico, ma una cattiva pubblicita’ per l’astronomia nel mondo non scientifico (De recentelijke degradatie van de status van Pluto als planeet is misschien goede reclame voor sterrenkunde in de wetenschappelijke wereld, maar slechte reclame voor sterrenkunde in de niet-wetenschappelijke wereld)

- La frase “le regole sono regole” e’ un’identita’ e puo’ quindi essere considerata priva di significato (De uitspraak “Regels zijn regels” is een identiteit en kan derhalve als overbodig worden beschouwd)
- L’homo sapiens e’ un flagello (De homo sapiens is een plaag)
- La probabilita’ che ci siano Elfstedentocht [corsa di pattinaggio di 200 km sui canali gelati della Frisia] nel futuro sta scendendo; la probabilita’ di nuovi record nel canottaggio sta salendo (De kans op Elfstedentochten in de toekomst neemt af; de kans op nieuwe naanrecords bij het roeien neemt toe)

- Benche’ in tribunale si applichi la regola “innocente fino a prova contraria”, nelle ambasciate, quando si chiede un visto, sembra che sia esattamente il contrario (While in court the rule applies “innocent till proven guilty”, in embassies, when applying for a visum, it seems to be the other way around)
- La tecnologia ha portato un nuovo aspetto alla guerra: ora puoi vedere il missile in televisione prima che colpisca casa tua (Technology brought a new aspect to war: you can see the missile on television before it hits your house)
- Basandomi sull’osservazione dell’ufficio di un professore di fronte al mio ufficio da studente di dottorato, ammesso che sia possibile giungere ad una conclusione da un singolo caso, i cestini della carta straccia degli uffici dei professori vengono svuotati piu’ spesso di quelli negli uffici dei dottorandi (Based on observations of the professor office across my PhD student’s office: if a conclusion can be drawn from a single case, the garbage bins in the professor’s offices are emptied with a higher frequency than the garbage bins in the student offices)

-Il mondo probabilmente sarebbe migliore se la gente cominciasse a considerare la propria religione come un normale hobby, alla stregua, ad esempio, del collezionare francobolli (Earth would probably be a better place if people were starting to consider their religion as a simple hobby, like stamp collecting for example.
